The flag of venezuela is a horizontal banner consisting of three vertical stripes, the top and bottom being yellow and the middle being red. On the left side of the flag is a golden eagle with wings outstretched, holding in its talons an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. At the top center of the flag is the coat of arms of venezuela, which consists of a shield with a blue background, and at its center, a golden lion rampant on a red and blue background. The flag of venezuela is one of the oldest flags in the americas and was adopted on july 23, 1840, during the presidential term of general jose luis san martin. The colors of the flag represent the independence, union, liberty, equality, justice, and fraternity of the venezuelan people.
